Description

The catalogue has been prepared for the exhibition "Ibn Fadlan's Journey. Volga Route from Baghdad to Bulghar", dedicated to the cultures of the people through whose lands the mission of the Caliph of Baghdad to the court of the king of Volga Bulgaria took place in the years 921–922. Ahmad ibn Fadlan, the secretary of this mission, left an invaluable source for the ethnography and history of the modern people from Central Asia and the Middle Volga region, as well as the wider forest zone of Eastern Europe. This publication opens with a new translation of this important source.

The exhibition, featuring more than 500 exhibits, both individual objects and entire complexes, presented the world of Ibn Fadlan's era, including not only the people whose territories the route of the mission passed through, but also those who were associated with or influenced by them. It demonstrated the various aspects of life in medieval societies that Ibn Fadlan encountered during his travels.

This book is intended for both specialists and those interested in the history and culture of the Middle Ages.
