Pavel Petrovich Benkov (1879-1949), a Russian and Soviet painter, was one of the most prominent representatives of Russian art in the twentieth century. After completing his studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1909, he returned to Kazan, his hometown, where he pursued a productive career as an artist and teacher. In 1930, Benkov relocated to Samarkand and remained there until the end of his life. Benkov developed his unique style, in which his remarkable talent as a colorist played an important role. His love of working en plein air was particularly evident in his works from the Central Asian period. Benkov's legacy is linked to the establishment of the national artistic school and the development of a distinctive painting tradition in Uzbekistan.
