Description

Album for Lev Snegirev's exhibition "On the Earthly Way", 2013.

Lev Snegirev is a talented artist. His works are filled with deep meaning and a special, intense sense of being. In his art, Snegirev combined the pictorial language of the 20th century with the traditions of iconography and the techniques of ancient Oriental paintings. His layered paintings are ambiguous and full of symbols. As he noted, "the image emerges spontaneously and its development and significance cannot be fully explained". In his paintings, Snegirev employed an original mixed medium, combining oil and tempera to maintain the overall tension in the colorful surface. Watercolors are based on large-scale sketches, but the artist emphasized that nature was merely a starting point, and the rest lay within the work itself. He found inspiration in simple landscape motifs, conveying different natural states and expressing both calm contemplation and inner energy. With a confident and firm hand, the lines, spots, dots and strokes were created in a variety, free and surprisingly accurately placed.
