Description

Apandi Magomedov belongs to the circle of Dagestani nonconformist artists who, since the 1970s, have been searching for an answer to the question of what Dagestani contemporary art is, and what its specific identity can be. His path to ethnicity was more direct — he literally walked from the soil, from the earth, and the everyday culture that is being formed on this particular land.

The kizyak used as fuel has come down to us without changing its original form. Its «timelessness,» from the viewpoint of art and artistic culture, is not in archaic forms of economic use but in its conceptual, philosophical sense.

«Kizyak—Dust—Nothing» — it is difficult to find such a clear symbol of the cycle of natural cycles, the transformation of the high into the low with subsequent rebirth. It is the philosophical aspect of this artistically experienced material that is felt in the extremely beautiful works of Apandi.
